Success Stories: Transforming Lives Through specialist Tutoring

Having worked in different schools for over 30 years, and being a proud mother of two children with autism, I have experienced many changes in the education system. Traditional classroom settings and a rigid curriculum may not always meet the needs of every learner. Students may face barriers that can hinder their learning, but once these are addressed, their unique talents can be unlocked.

However, when I started working with her we focused on her special interests and used specific learning tools to tap into her talent. With the use of visual aids, hands-on sensory activities and technology, everything changed. She gained confidence in her abilities and was proud of her achievement.

Take the story of Harry, a primary school student who was at risk of exclusion. He had an EHCP and was diagnosed with global delay. Mum was finding it very difficult to navigate the school systems and get the appropriate support she needed. After working very closely with the family within their home, it became evident that Harry was displaying traits of autism and ADHD. I focused on addressing his sensory needs and tailored all activities to his special interests. His confidence soared and he started to engage.

I offered support to mum in terms of pursuing a new referral to CAHMS through the school, attended his Annual reviews and made changes within the home.

Harry was finally diagnosed with ADHD and Autism in addition to his global delay and his EHCP was amended accordingly. He received extra support at school including access to sensory circuits, access to SALT sessions and a more personalised curriculum.This change not only impacted his academic performance but also his social life and self esteem.

Specialist tutoring can take many forms. It can be one-on-one sessions, small group tutoring, or even online classes. The key is to find the right approach for each student.

For instance, Mark, a secondary student with ADHD and autism, struggled to keep up with his work and became very demotivated. Traditional study methods did not work for him despite being very clever. I introduced him to time management techniques and interactive study tools.

With these tailored strategies, he learned to focus better and manage his time more effectively. He went from barely attending his classes to achieving high grades. This success story shows how personalised approaches can lead to significant improvements.

Consider the case of Harry, a school refuser at the age of 13. He started working with a tutor who not only helped him with his studies but also provided life advice. Together, they set goals and created a plan for him to return to school.

With his tutor's support, Harry did his Level 1 and 2 Functional skills and completed his studies. He is now pursuing a college degree. This story illustrates how mentorship can inspire students to overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams.

For example, I worked for many months with Aura, a non verbal primary aged student attending a special school. Mum wished for Aura to become more independent and have basic life skills. She also hoped that she could learn to read and communicate her basic needs. Working closely with mum, we added visuals in the home environment and introduced a Now Next board that travelled everywhere with Aura. I provided Aura with a personalised programme which I followed each week, modelling my teaching approach to mum. I then devised up a visual daily routine for mum to use at home- this included sensory exercises, attention autism activities, synthetic phonics and pecs to communicate.

I also worked closely with Aura's school, attended meetings and Annual reviews and provided them with resources to use that had been successful at home.

We set realistic goals together and watched Aura gain confidence and skills that will benefit her in the future.

Aura's journey shows that unique tutoring can prepare students for success in all areas of life.

Community and Support Networks

I have extensive experience working with external agencies, such as Speech and Language therapists, Occupational therapists, Educational Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Social workers and Early Help.

I have close links with National Autistic Society, Ambitious about Autism, Autistica and local parent partnership services which provide invaluable support and guidance.

I am also an active member of Chickenshed Theatre which welcomes children with special needs and fosters a sense of belonging for all. also a big part of my life tutoring often fosters a sense of community.

A sense of belonging can motivate students to stay engaged, feel valued and strive for success.
